Strength standards: useful orientation, terrible verdict

Every site places you in a different band, and none of them is authoritative. Here is what these tables can and cannot tell you about your training.

“Am I strong?” is a question with no objective answer, which has not stopped the internet from producing dozens of tables that confidently claim to provide one.

Strength standards are genuinely useful, but for a narrower purpose than most people use them for.

What a standard actually is

Almost every strength standard expresses a lift as a multiple of bodyweight. A 2× bodyweight squat means the same thing at 60 kilograms and at 100, even though the plates on the bar differ substantially.

This is the same reasoning behind powerlifting coefficients: absolute load favours larger lifters, so comparison needs normalising. Multiples of bodyweight are a cruder correction than a fitted coefficient, but they are far easier to reason about and adequate for orientation.

It is worth knowing where these thresholds come from, because it is not what most people assume. The most-cited academic framework proposes classification bands built on exactly this logic — a squat above roughly 1.5× bodyweight marking the top tier for men, for instance. 1 But that is a proposed model published in a practitioner journal, offered as a common vocabulary so researchers can describe their samples consistently. It is not a survey of what people actually lift.

That distinction matters for how much weight to put on a label. A percentile tells you where you sit in a measured population. A classification band tells you which side of a line somebody drew for a different purpose. Both are useful; only one is a fact about the world.

Better tables also adjust for age and sex. Strength peaks somewhere in the late twenties and declines gradually after, so comparing a fifty-year-old against an open-age standard is comparing across a real physiological gap.

Why every table gives a different answer

Look up “intermediate squat standard” across five sites and you will find five different numbers, sometimes differing by half a bodyweight multiple.

The reason is that they are drawn from different populations. A table built on data from people who log lifts in a training app reflects a self-selected group who are more committed than average. A table built on general population testing reflects something else entirely. A table assembled from a coach’s clientele reflects that coach’s clientele.

None of these is wrong. They are describing different groups, and the labels attached to the bands — novice, intermediate, advanced — are editorial choices, not measurements.

Being "intermediate" on one site and "novice" on another does not mean one of them is lying. It means the word has no fixed definition.

Progress between levels is wildly uneven

The bands are not equally spaced in time, and this is the thing most people misread.

Getting from untrained to novice can take a few months of consistent training, and often happens faster than expected because early strength gains are substantially neural — you are learning to express force you already had. Novice to intermediate typically takes a year or more. Intermediate to advanced can take several years, and many committed trainees never reach the top band at all.

Meta-analytic work on training dose response is clear that the volume required to keep progressing rises with training age, and that the rate of return falls. So a slowing rate of progress is not evidence that your programme has stopped working. It is the expected shape of a training career.

Using standards well

As a next milestone. The most useful thing a standard gives you is a concrete target slightly above where you are. Our calculator shows the gap to the next level in kilograms, which is a more actionable number than a label.

As a balance check. Comparing your bands across lifts is more informative than any single lift’s placement. An advanced deadlift alongside a novice overhead press is a signal about your training history, and a reasonable prompt to redistribute effort.

Not as an identity. The band is a description of one number on one day. It says nothing about your potential, your health, your work ethic, or whether your training is well designed.

The bottom line

Strength standards are a map with an unreliable legend. They will tell you roughly where you are and what the next landmark looks like, which is genuinely valuable.

What they will not tell you is whether you are training well, whether you are progressing appropriately for your circumstances, or what you are capable of. Those questions are answered by your own training log over months — not by a table.
