How this site makes money

Some links to products are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may receive a commission from the retailer at no additional cost to you. Where a block of links is affiliate-based, it says so directly above the links — not in a footnote, and not after you have already clicked.

Reader donations

There is a Support button in the header and footer. It goes to a payment page hosted by Stripe, our payment processor — the same way the equipment links go to a retailer.

Two things worth stating plainly. Donating buys nothing. There is no members' area, no early access, no removal of anything, and no tool or article behind it. Everything on this site is free to everyone whether or not anybody ever donates, and that is not a limited-time position.

And we do not receive your payment details. Your name, email, card and any message stay with Stripe. Nothing about a donation reaches this site, which has no database and no account system. We cannot see who donated, and we could not tell you if you asked. That is a deliberate design choice, not an oversight — it is what lets the privacy policy say we hold no personal information and mean it literally.

Donations never influence what we recommend. A tool's result depends on the numbers you enter and the equation behind it, and there is no mechanism by which a payment could change either.

What advertisers learn about you

Nothing you type into a calculator, because that information never leaves your browser. If you follow an affiliate link, the retailer knows you came from this site — the same as any ordinary link. See ourprivacy page.

FTC disclosure

United States Federal Trade Commission guidance requires that material connections between a publisher and a seller be disclosed clearly and conspicuously, near the recommendation rather than buried. That is why the affiliate notice sits directly above the links it applies to, in the same type size as the surrounding text, rather than in a footer.
